In a world of steep competition for the crown of “Greatest Supercar Ever Made” Lamborghini releases a stripped down, slightly fortified and definitely more aggressive-looking Gallardo under the name Superleggera. Originally unveiled at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, the LP570-4 Superleggera received rave reviews and captured the hearts and imagination of next-generation motor heads eager to witness the latest variant that the raging bull had to offer.
A stripped down version of the Gallardo, the Superleggera weighs in around a 154 pounds less bringing the total weight to 2,954 lbs. Several modifications were made to reduce weight. A significantly lighter yet still car-wash-friendly polycarbonate was used to replace glass on everything except the windshield. Additional weight was saved by the heavy use of carbon fiber on the interior and exterior of the car and removal of the carpet and noise reduction panels. Exterior components that were replaced with carbon fiber include the rear diffuser, underbody paneling, exterior mirror housings, door sills and the rear spoiler.
Any vehicle can be made lighter by removing parts that are considered nonessential items such as the air-conditioning and radio. From an engineering perspective the goal was not to just throw things away, the idea was to increase performance by reducing weight while keeping the car enjoyable to drive. This was made possible through conducting composite-structures research in partnership with Boeing and the University of Washington’s Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory. Lamborghini claims that this type of research is rapidly lowering the price of parts to the point that these components will be affordable on mass production vehicles.
The engine in the Lamborghini LP570-4 Superleggera is the same V10 engine from the Gallardo; howver, the engineers at Lamborghini sqeezed 20 more hp from it bringing the total to 570 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque. The top speed of the Superleggera; a mere 202 mph with a 0-60 mph time of 3.4 seconds which is a clean 0.4 seconds faster than the standard Gallardo.
When pulling out of the pit lane in the Superleggera the first thing you will notice is the sound. With absolutely no noise reduction materials inside the car, the roar of the 570 hp V10 is mind blowing. Step down on the accelerator and 570 horses fill the cabin.
Overall, the Lamborghini LP570-4 Superleggera is a lighter, faster, and more raw version of the Gallardo. The weight reduction has paid off handsomely in both the handling and performance making the Superleggera an unmatched road-going supercar.less >
